Writers such as Nietzsche, Dürrenmatt and Kästner, artists like Beuys or Chagall, and musicians such as Strauss, Honegger and David Bowie all drew inspiration from the enchanting wide open spaces and the magical quality of the light in this high-lying valley, and they all played a considerable role in establishing Sils’ international reputation as the cultural centre of the Engadin.
With just 750 inhabitants, living predominantly in two quarters of the village, Sils has an unhurried, friendly and inviting air about it. Our guests just love the relaxed peace and quiet in this magnificent natural environment with its enriching contrast to everyday life, as well as the easy-going atmosphere at the hotels, inns and holiday apartments in Sils.
Moreover, they automatically become part of a tradition that is not just cultivated but also lived to the full, and which contributes greatly to the resort’s authentic holiday feeling. Anyone who gazes out over the seemingly endless expanse of the Sils plain and the deep-blue lake will understand how Hermann Hesse felt when he described the area as “Paradise on earth”.
Nestling idyllically between Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana, the village lies at the gateway to the romantic Fex valley. Abounding in beautiful flower-laden meadows, this valley is a particularly romantic experience when explored in the comfort of a trip by horse and carriage. Hiking enthusiasts will love the wide open spaces of this light-flooded landscape, which is said to be overflowing with life force. On a par with the superlative nature experience is the range of cultural activities in Sils; almost every week, audiences are treated to first-class concerts starring famous artists, classical Sunday afternoon concerts performed outside, as well as a wide selection of readings, talks, guided tours, theatre and exhibitions. In addition, in summer Sils is host to five high-calibre cultural highlights: the Sils Hesse Days, the Wasserzeichen (watermark) concerts, performed on a raft in a picturesque bay of the Chastè peninsula, the Kunst- und LiteraTourtage (art and litera¬ture festival), the Nietzsche Colloquium and the international cultural feast «Resonanzen».
