Samedan
At 1720 m above sea level, in the sun-drenched valley floor on the edge of the wide La Plaiv, Samedan has long been a hub in many ways. The world comes together here, whether with the Rhaetian Railway, which has one of the canton's most important railway junctions here, or by air with a route to Engadin Airport, the highest airport in Europe. And from here our guests can easily explore the numerous excursion destinations in the area, as the dense network of public transport takes them quickly and easily to the corners of our high valley.
More than "just" a village
Did you know that the municipality of Samedan includes not "just" the village of the same name between Celerina and Bever, but some of the most distinctive landscapes and mountains in the entire Engadin? Two large areas totaling 114 km² make up Samedan: the smaller area (47 km²) includes the entire Val Muragl, the Val Champagna, the valley floor of the Inn with the village, the mountain region of Padella, the Piz Ot and a large part of the Val Bever up to the border with Bergün; the larger area (67 km²) combines the imposing mountain chain of Piz Morteratsch, Piz Bernina, Piz Roseg, Piz Corvatsch and Piz Rosatsch!
Muottas Muragl, with the Engadin panoramic view par excellence, is also part of the municipality as the picturesque Val Roseg, one of the most beautiful side valleys in our region. A hike on Samedner soil is therefore exemplary of the contrasting nature of the Engadin. Its contrasts captivate visitors: gentle mountain peaks with lush alpine meadows lie right next to mighty glaciers, snow-covered peaks, dense forests and glittering lakes.

On the Trail of Culture
Samedan can not only boast natural beauty, the stately Engadin houses in its village center are also a picture postcard idyll. Above all, highlights such as the Upper Engadin cultural center Chesa Planta, the Rococo stucco work and the restored "La Tuor" represent valuable Engadin cultural assets. The church buildings - four in number and each a true architectural gem - are also among the most important architectural monuments in Graubünden.

Samedner cultural treasures
Of course, in the circle of Sameden's cultural treasures, we must not forget the intangible asset of the Romansh language, which accompanies us every day, every step of the way. Did you know, for example, that the name of the municipality is present in three different ways? The Lower Engadine/German pronunciation [sɐˈmɑːdə(n)] was officially replaced by the version [sɐˈmeːdən] in 1943, although the popular pronunciation [sameˈdaːn] with emphasis on the final syllable is still used by outsiders.
Everything you need for your holiday in Samedan
The vibrant capital of the Upper Engadine is not only the political centre, but also the home of the Engadine way of life. Samedan owes its importance to its location in the heart of the Upper Engadine: the village is the hub of the Rhaetian Railway and home to the small international airport.

Tee off in the middle of the Engadin mountains - the Samedan golf course
Samedner Dorfgeschichte
The place name Samedan is one of the most enigmatic village names, and many a linguist has been left tearing his hair out in search of a plausible derivation. Experts are more or less unanimous that the "SUMM AD OENUM", which can be deciphered on old seals, serves as the basis for all interpretations.
