Biking in the mountains

Mountain bike maps reveal at a glance how extensive the trail network is in the Samedner municipality area. If you need more precise tips - for example, which climb is the hardest, which route offers the best views or which flow trail is the... well, the flowiest - our bike experts will give you the information you need. Or simply join one of the many guided bike tours. Specialized bike hotels with extra service provide the right setting, while the Upper Engadine mountain railways transport mountain bikers to sporty heights.

Alp Muntatsch - Marguns

The first ascent begins at the upper edge of the village of Samedan, near the shooting range. The wide dirt road winds its way up the mountain in wide bends, while the views between the trees become increasingly impressive. With a bit of luck, you may come across deer or chamois along the way.

Just above the tree line, the magnificent mountain panorama of Alp Muntatsch opens up. In summer, the shepherds treat their guests to small specialities - the homemade apple strudel has long since made a name for itself in the valley! Those who prefer to skip the alpine hut can enjoy the view over the Engadin directly from the saddle.

A technical singletrail below the Piz Padella invites you to take a photo break before the descent to Marguns begins. Skill and concentration are required here, as the bike should be pushed in some sections. From Marguns, the ride continues in a relaxed manner: the tour descends gently downhill to Celerina via a gravel road.

Suvretta Loop

This 34-kilometre dream tour begins at Celerina railway station and initially climbs a relaxed 400 metres to Alp Laret. But then it gets sporty: the ascents to the Glüna hut, past Lej Alv, and further up to an impressive 2400 metres above sea level demand strength and endurance. At the top of the Corviglia mountain station, the sun terrace of the Quattro Bar invites you to take a well-deserved break – with a magnificent view and a little refreshment.

Once you've had a chance to catch your breath, it's time to tackle the last 200-metre ascent. As you circle Piz Nair, you'll be treated to spectacular views of the turquoise-blue lakes and the imposing peaks of the Engadin. After these highlights comes the absolute highlight: a technically demanding five-kilometre single trail descent through Val Suvretta da Samedan to Alp Suvretta.

After that, a relaxed tour through the idyllic Val Bever awaits you – the perfect end to the tour. At the Spinas inn, you should treat yourself to a piece of Engadin nut cake before you gently coast through the last stage of the Suvretta Loop towards Samedan.

A singletrail dream through the magnificent scenery of Val Suvretta and Val Bever. The route was diverted via Fuorcla Schlattain (with pushing sections) because there is a risk of rockfall at Munt da San Murezzan and the trail is closed. Alternatively, the cable car to Piz Nair can be taken from Corviglia.

Padella Corviglia panoramic tour

On this top-class round trip (41 km) you will experience the Upper Engadine at its best. The tour offers various intermediate entry points or starting points thanks to the three mountain railways, Marguns, Corviglia and Signal, and can therefore easily be ridden in several day stages (such as the route described in bike tip 1). The route officially begins in Celerina, leads to Samedan and up to Alp Muntasch. There the trail runs below Piz Padella and Trais Fluors all the way to Marguns. Via Corviglia it continues towards Val Suvretta, Orchas and Silvaplana. On the opposite side of the valley near Surlej the trail takes you past Lej Nair, through St. Moritz Bad, past Lej da Staz (our tip: dare to jump into the cool water) and over Alp Staz back to Celerina.
