The hamlet of Isola

Maloja Isola im Sommer
Places where there are more animals than people are nice. They give you a feeling for how people once lived – Isola used to be used only as an alpine pasture – and that even today you don't need much to be happy. A place like Isola is more than enough for that.

Places where there are more animals than people are nice. They give you a feeling for how people once lived – Isola used to be used only as an alpine pasture – and that even today you don't need much to be happy. A place like Isola is more than enough for that.

It is small, idyllic and picturesque - simply beautiful, this island. No wonder the hamlet, which lies in the middle of Sils and Maloja, attracts numerous visitors in both summer and winter. Sun-kissed in summer, the place lacks a few hours of sunshine in winter, but this does not detract from a winter walk or a trip on cross-country skis.

Pearl on Lake Sils

In summer, Isola can be reached on foot, by bike or by boat. Europe's highest scheduled boat, which sails on Lake Sils, also docks in Isola. This makes it easy to combine a trip to Isola with a boat trip and a walk from Maloja or Sils beforehand or afterwards. You can stop off at the Lagrev restaurant - the view of the lake from the terrace is unforgettable. If you want to stay overnight, you can do that here too.

Lake Sils: cruising at the highest level

Glide through spectacular scenery on Europe's highest-altitude scheduled boat service.

At exactly 1,800 metres above sea level, Europe's highest scheduled boat service links Sils Maria, Chastè, Plaun da Lej, Isola and Maloja. Along the way, it glides past historic sites such as the Chastè peninsula - here, under the larch trees, stands the bench where the philosopher and poet Friedrich Nietzsche used to sit and find inspiration. The entire round trip on the largest lake in Graubünden takes 40 minutes. You can also incorporate a cruise on the lake into a walk - such as the classic Four Lakes Hike, taking the boat from Sils to Maloja and so shortening the walk by an hour. This boat service has been operating for over one hundred years.
