Guided village tour of Samedan
The picturesque village delights with its postcard idyll and colourful hustle and bustle
The lively capital of the Upper Engadine is not only the political centre, but also a haven for the Engadine way of life. Samedan owes its importance to its location in the heart of the Upper Engadine: the village is the hub of the Rhaetian Railway and home to the small international airport.
Thanks to its location in the heart of our high valley, Samedan developed early on into the capital of the Upper Engadine. But even though political and economic life is humming and bustling here, Samedan has retained its Engadin way of life. Its sense of tradition is also reflected in the village's appearance, where the façades in the streets and alleyways with their rich sgraffito are the most beautiful photo subjects.
Those interested in culture need not look far for fascinating highlights in Samedan, as they are strung together in the village centre like pearls on a necklace: first and foremost the renovated medieval watchtower ‘La Tuor’ and the stately Chesa Planta dating from 1595, which today serves as a museum of domestic culture and has a richly stocked Romanesque library, ensuring that Engadin culture remains a living part of the present. The first vertical mineral bath & spa in Switzerland, which invites you to ‘bathe between heaven and earth, church and mountains’, is also located in the historic village centre.
The village tour starts at the tourist information office and leads via the schoolhouse square to the historic village centre of Sur Tuor. It continues via Bügl da la Nina to Restaurant Central, the village church and then to Chesa Planta before returning to the starting point.
