Portaledge on the glacier in Pontresina, Engadin

Dusk falls and the last rays of sunlight illuminate the majestic peaks of the Engadin in a golden glow. The day was long, but the goal will soon be reached. High above the Morteratsch Valley, at around 3000 meters on Piz Trovat, we prepare for what is probably the most extraordinary night we have ever experienced. Under the professional supervision of the Pontresina mountaineering school, we hang our portaledge from the almost vertical rock face, ready for this unique experience. The air is clear and the flickering of the first stars promises a breathtaking night sky. Our gaze wanders over the imposing Piz Palü and the magnificent Piz Bernina. The ascent via the Trovat via ferrata from Diavolezza was challenging, but the view and the anticipation made every effort worthwhile.

Hovering above the peaks

A portaledge is a portable platform that mountaineers hang from steep rock faces to sleep or rest on. The robust frame and stable fabric surface make it possible to create a horizontal resting surface where there are no natural resting places. They are ideal for multi-day climbing tours and allow you to spend the night in comfort at dizzying heights - just like the pros on El Capitan!
