Panoramic train rides
Train journeys that will amaze you
The Engadin is not only known for its mountains, lakes and incomparable light, but also for spectacular train journeys, for example on the Albula line from St. Moritz/Samedan to Chur. It features imposing viaducts, mysterious helical tunnels and ingenious engineering structures – all harmoniously integrated into the wild landscape. The world-famous highlight is the 65-metre-high Landwasser Viaduct near Filisur, built of dark limestone.
From glaciers to palm trees and back
No less spectacular is the Bernina Line from St. Moritz/Pontresina to Tirano in Italy. The highest point, the Ospizio Bernina station, is 2,253 metres above sea level, and travellers' gaze falls on glaciers and barren mountain slopes. The terminus at Tirano is 429 metres above sea level, where fruit trees, vines and even palm trees grow. The RhB overcomes this enormous difference in altitude without the use of a cogwheel – a technical masterpiece and unique in Europe. At its steepest point, the railway negotiates a gradient of 70 per thousand.
UNESCO World Heritage RhB
Together, the Albula and Bernina lines form the ‘UNESCO World Heritage RhB’. The route leads over a total of 196 bridges and through 55 tunnels, crossing the Alps from north to south – with the Engadin at its heart. From St. Moritz, Samedan or Pontresina, you can explore various excursion destinations in the ‘UNESCO World Heritage RhB’.
Bernina Express
This panoramic train runs through the impressive UNESCO World Heritage site of the Rhaetian Railway, past eternal ice and down to the palm trees of Poschiavo. Its route is certainly one of the most spectacular in the European Alpine region.
The Hollywood-style backdrop that the Bernina Express traverses is not only breathtakingly beautiful, but also showcases some incredible feats of engineering: the train passes through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges between Chur and Tirano, including the 65-metre-high Landwasser Viaduct. Along the way, it passes numerous highlights such as the Montebello curve, the Morteratsch glacier, Lake Bianco and the circular Brusio viaduct.

Glacier Express
Make way for pure pleasure: since 1930, the Glacier Express, one of the most popular scenic trains in the world, has been inspiring awe and enthusiasm in its passengers. On their journey from the dazzling St. Moritz to sophisticated Zermatt, they are treated to an incomparable feast for the eyes and palate, with the spectacular Alpine world passing by outside the high panoramic windows and freshly prepared regional delicacies being served inside.
This panoramic journey is even more spectacular if you opt for one of the coveted seats in the Excellence Class. Wide seats, on-board entertainment, a concierge service, an exclusive bar and a personal travel companion ensure a deluxe rail experience. The cuisine is also exquisite, with champagne aperitifs, sophisticated amuse-bouches and a five-course menu with accompanying wines. If the breathtakingly beautiful Matterhorn doesn't make your heart beat faster when you reach your destination, it will be hard to get out of the train!
