Classic

It takes around half a meter of snow to create a classic trail. In the Engadine you will find over 240 kilometers of such trails. The classic style is as old as cross-country skiing. When done dynamically, the technique is probably more demanding than skating. But be that as it may. In addition to the trails that offer both a classic and a skating trail, there are also those that are reserved for classic lovers - a total of 135 of them. For example, the one in Val Roseg. More about this dream trail and other tips for classic fun.

Skating

Skaters get their money's worth in the Engadin. Around 200 of the more than 240 kilometers of trails can be covered using free technique. A highlight are the lake trails from Maloja to Champfèr - the feeling of gliding over the frozen Upper Engadin lakes gives you wings. A well-intentioned tip: watch out for the Maloja wind. Whether you want to run with or against the wind is up to you - but over 13 kilometers the direction can make a decisive difference. More trail tips for skaters.

Cross-country skiing tips & rules of behaviour

  • The difficulty level of the cross-country trails (easy, medium, difficult), the kilometre and altitude information and the duration help you to choose the route according to your ability.
  • Allow enough time and find out about the possibilities for turning back.
  • Skis, bindings, boots, poles. These cross-country skiing centres and sports shops will bring your equipment up to scratch and check the correct length of poles and skis.
  • You need to learn how to glide confidently on narrow skis: cross-country skiing instructors introduce beginners to the correct technique.
  • Special care is required in icy conditions.
  • Only use the regular cross-country trails during daylight hours; there are three floodlit night trails in the evening. If you do your laps in the dark, you reduce the quality of the freshly groomed cross-country trails for the next day and run the risk of colliding with snow groomers.
  • Never walk directly behind a snow groomer. There is a danger to life.
  • The person travelling downhill has right of way.
  • Do not skate across the classic track.
  • On the four marked dog cross-country trails, four-legged friends are allowed to run alongside cross-country skiers without a lead, but dogs are not allowed on any other trails.
  • An extensive network of winter hiking trails is available to pedestrians and cyclists. They leave tracks on the cross-country ski trails that impair the quality of the piste.
  • The rules of conduct of the International Ski Federation FIS also ensure conflict-free cross-country skiing enjoyment.
