Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900) was a "free spirit" who, like Schopenhauer, thought ascetically, but later propagated the "will to power" and ultimately portrayed himself as the "Antichrist" before succumbing to mental derangement. Thomas Mann followed the brilliant thinker early on in his Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man and, in his Doctor Faustus, astutely distanced himself from Nietzsche's politically devastating influence. Thus, in Thomas Mann's light, Nietzsche's philosophical passion, poised between creativity and illness, also finds political expression.
