Muottas Muragl

Where beauty lies at your feet

«Breathtaking!» - «Overwhelming! » - «Wow!» Yes, when it comes to our paragon mountain, we actually can read your mind. The probably most stunning view of the Engadin leaves no one untouched. For the past 160 years, leisure and pleasure seekers revel on Muottas Muragl in the pure glory of the mountains. Indulge yourself, too, in the grandezza of this alpine splendour!

A trip to this magnificent and popular mountain is simply a must. «Anyone who wants to see the Engadin heads for Muottas Muragl, the exceptional mountain for excursions with its simultaneous view on the Upper Engadin’s alpine lakescape and the Bernina group’s ice capped peaks,» the Baedecker recommended to Engadin summer tourists as early as 1867, and it strongly entrusted to them the two and a half hour hike from the valley bottom to the observation deck situated at about 2450 metres. An emotional appeal – and, for sure, emotions do run high on Muottas Muragl!

Over the course of time more and more panorama addicts fell under the spell of the overpowering view from Muottas Muragl and a red funicular was built in 1907 – the second oldest of its kind in the Canton of Grisons – to scale the steep mountainside and to afford a comfortable access to this blissful experience.

Muottas Muragl

The summit station at the Romantik Hotel is the starting point for hikes that all by themselves would fill a “best of”-list. The varied network of rambling trails lead you right into the panorama, via easy and high alpine routes, both fit for short family trips or for trekking fans with stamina. Accompanied by the whistling of the adorable marmots that from their lookouts keep a wary eye on your advancing, and occasionally even by a herd of ibex, you discover Engadin treasures: the small mountain lake Lej Muragl between sweeping mountainsides, the beautifully situated Segantini Hut or, in winter, the wisdoms of famous poets and philosophers along the Philosopher’s Trail.

Engadin light show

Those who do not wander over hill and dale, gaze dreamily across the chain of lakes into the distance to the grand light window of the Engadin, to Maloja. Meanwhile and all year round, the famous Engadin sun provides enchanting illumination, invigorating warmth and, in the evening, an unforgettable play of colours. There are few sunsets that are more magnificent than those that can be watched from the natural box seat on Muottas Muragl. Treat yourself to some fine food at the “Mountain Dining” in the Romantik Hotel’s panoramic restaurant and to the soul-stirring natural spectacle behind the window: the horizon above the distant Bregaglia seems to be illuminated by golden smoke, and the glaciers on the white high peaks turn into glowing streams of fire … you see, the thought alone of Muottas Muragl kindles poetic reveries!
