Special exhibition at the Segantini Museum

St.Moritz
"One must admit that the portrait is the most demanding in the artistic and pictorial" - Giovanni Segantini as a portrait painter. Special exhibition at the Segantini Museum, June 1-October 20, 2021, Tue-Sun 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Giovanni Segantini became famous during his lifetime as a landscape painter. However, he himself considered another pictorial genre to be the noblest, namely the portrait, as it "has as its aim the exploration of the human face". With a high-quality selection of portraits (and self-portraits) from international collections, the exhibition at the Segantini Museum illuminates for the first time this unjustly lesser-known aspect of Segantini´s work.

The 16 paintings and 6 graphic works on display span his entire artistic career from his Milan beginnings (1880) to his early death in the Upper Engadine (1899). Highlights of the show include intimate portraits such as that of his companion Bice from 1890, as well as representative portraits such as those of the siblings Vittore and Leopoldina Grubicy, which are among the finest examples of Segantini´s talent as an "explorer of the human face".

Curated by Prof. Annie-Paule Quinsac and Dr. Mirella Carbone. Special guided tours with Dr. Mirella Carbone on Sun. July 4, Sun. August 8, and Sun. September 5, each at 5:00 p.m. (www.segantini-museum.ch).
