In St. Moritz and the Upper Engadine, around 200 spa concerts can be heard every summer. A tradition that is unparalleled in Europe and has been at home here since the end of the 19th century. At that time, musicians from La Scala in Milan, among others, made a start. Even master conductor Arturo Toscanini did not miss the opportunity to be present at one or the other concert. Today, under the artistic direction of Dr. Jürg H. Frei, salon ensemble members and soloists from numerous countries travel to St. Moritz.
Whereas in the past mainly salon music was played - as was customary in the coffee house or bourgeois salon and ballroom of the 19th century between 1880 and 1950 - the repertoire has now expanded considerably to include chamber music works, opera and musical arrangements, jazz and contemporary music. For this very reason, the Salonorchester St. Moritz enjoys an unbroken popularity, which has now also reached the younger generations. Although the genre of the salon orchestra is almost extinct and the pace of the digital world has long deprived such ensembles, today it embodies a welcome, analog counterpart to it.
The St. Moritz Salon Orchestra´s spa concerts will take place in the summer of 2021 at a central location in the Reformed Village Church of St. Moritz (pedestrian zone). The morning performances begin daily at 10:30 a.m. and last one hour. Admission is free. Please note: Due to the current situation, the number of seats is limited.
