Open Doors - Transformer Tower Castell

The Castell transformer tower, designed by Nicolaus Hartmann Jr. in 1920, is a symbol of electrification in the Upper Engadine and a testament to regional building culture.

Historical aspects The Maloja region has various similarities with the work of Nicolaus Hartmann Jr. (1880 - 1956). A little known example is a charming project by Hartmann below the Hotel Castell (Hartmann). In 1920, the electricity company built a "transformer station with appropriate facilities for supplying energy for lighting and power purposes" here. Despite technological developments, the transformer tower, which is owned by Repower, is still in operation and fulfils its function of frequency reduction for domestic use. Hartmann took the opportunity to design the characteristic curved roof shape for the transformer building. Electrification has shaped the landscape and architecture of the Upper Engadine for almost 140 years. The Castell transformer tower is a small testament to this special building culture. "On the way to the Hotel Castell on the road of the same name is the modernized transformer station 0075 Zuoz Castell of Repower AG. The remarkable transformer tower from 1920 was designed by Nicolaus Hartmann Jr. and its external appearance was modelled on the baroque garden house in Ilanz. » Source: Book Trafoturm-Turmtrafo by Yvonne Scheiwiller
