Architecture walk - open doors in the Engadin and Bergell

St. Moritz Energie has various similarities with the work of Nicolaus Hartmann Jr. (1880-1956). A little-known project by Hartmann at Via Grevas 12, near his former architectural office at Via Ludains 4 (today's Denner branch) and the existing Villa Heimat, is less well-known. Here, in 1904, the electricity company built a "transformer station with appropriate facilities for supplying energy for lighting and power purposes". Technological developments soon led to the Heimat transformer station being assessed by the high-voltage current inspectorate. The facility had to make way for a new building for a military barracks, to which the new station was added and "carried out with the utmost care". Hartmann used the opportunity to design the characteristic dome for the tower-shaped transformer building.

Electrification has shaped the landscape and architecture of the Upper Engadine for almost 140 years. The "Heimat" transformer station is a small testament to this special building culture.
