Open Doors Engadin - Segantini Museum

St. Moritz
Architecture walk - open doors in the Engadin and Bergell

In 1908, nine years after Giovanni Segantini's death, the museum dedicated to him was ceremoniously inaugurated in St. Moritz. The imposing central building on the steep slope above Lake St. Moritz faces east towards the Schafberg, where Segantini died. The architecture by Nicolaus Hartmann (1880–1956) is based on the monumental pavilion that the artist designed for his Engadin Panorama for the Paris World Exhibition (1900). The building with its mighty dome has the feel of a mausoleum and looks like a walk-in, monumental monument.

In 1981, it was expanded by adding a narrow, arched exhibition room. To mark the 100th anniversary of Segantini's death, the museum was extensively renovated, restored and expanded by architect Hans-Jörg Ruch in 1998/99. The next renovation and extension of the building took place in the summer and autumn of 2019. A small visitor café, a multi-purpose room for working with school groups, meetings and restoration work, and new storage rooms were created. In addition, the lighting, air conditioning and security systems were modernized.
