Open Doors Engadin - Customs pavilion Castasegna

Maloja
Architecture for everyone. At the end of June, Bergell and Engadin open their doors for a weekend.

The customs pavilion designed by Bruno Giacometti for the Federal Customs Office in Castasegna was built in 1958-1959 as a result of the growing border traffic. It stands at the end of the border village just before the bridge over the Lovero stream. The concrete structure, consisting of cantilevers and beams, forms a table-like platform for the solitary building, which is clad in red aluminium panels and appears to float above the steep embankment. The floating appearance is emphasised by the polygonal flat roof, which rests on four slender metal supports and is set off from the structure by a continuous band of windows. A concrete foundation extending below the street level forms a counterweight, so that the structural centre of gravity is in the area of the glazed street façade. The white wooden skeleton and the red panels create a picture puzzle that alternates between the Swiss flag and the Red Cross emblem. The customs pavilion is one of the few buildings by Giacometti in which colour is used as an effective design element.
