Open Doors Engadin - Chesa Salis

Bever
Free guided tours of the Chesa Salis during opening hours.

The Chesa Salis - built in 1590 - was a farmhouse consisting of two buildings, the residential building and the stable with the hayloft. In 1883, Nicolaus Hartmann Sr. converted the farmhouse into a stately residence. Hartmann harmoniously combined the existing building with the eclecticism prevalent at the time and joined the two structures together.

He structured the façades with a wealth of architectural sgraffito bands carved into the plaster, framing the windows and door arches and simulating ashlar masonry. This refers not only to the architecture of Biagio Rossetti, but also to others who were closer to the architects Karl F. Schinkel and Gottfried Semper.

The Chesa Salis - a hotel since 1981 - is a building structure that has evolved over centuries and is of great value in the village fabric of Bever, which is of national importance. Despite the renovations in 1981, the building has retained much of its historical quality and is a historic site worthy of protection from the point of view of the monument preservation authorities. The historic garden, enclosed by a wooden picket fence on a wall plinth, is also particularly attractive.

Guided tours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., maximum 12 people per tour.
