Open Doors Engadin – Chamuera power station

La Punt Chamues-ch
Guided tour of the ‘Hotel Krone - Säumerei am Inn’ in La Punt Chamues-ch.

Rätia Energie AG (now Repower AG) operated the Chamuera power plant in the municipality of La Punt Chamues-ch until 2000. The concession to utilise the water of the Ova Chamuera was granted to EW Madulain in 1904 by the municipality, which was called Ponte Campovasto until 1943.

The aim of EW Madulain was to generate electricity for the railway in view of the planned electrified Bever-Scuol railway line, which was opened in 1913. Originally, a larger plant with a reservoir, tunnels and power house was planned in Seglias, to the west of Chamues-ch.

However, due to a lack of winter energy and above-average favourable water conditions in winter, a provisional small power station was built. The Chamuera power plant went into operation in 1907 and was sold to AG Bündner Kraftwerke (BK) in 1924, from which Rätia Energie AG emerged in 2000 through a merger with Kraftwerke Brusio AG (KWB) and Rhätische Werke für Elektrizität AG (RW). The plant was also operated until 2000. It was then shut down as it was no longer operational. The power plant utilised the inflow of the Ova Chamuera at a gross gradient of approx. 29.5 metres.

In 2006, Rätia Energie AG drew up a new concession project (KP06). As a result, the existing plant was to be completely modernised and expanded. A comprehensive project study carried out in the following years showed that the construction of a larger plant made more sense from an energy and economic perspective than a moderate expansion of the existing plant.

However, the population of La Punt Chamues-ch rejected the project by 74 votes to 64 with the decision in principle taken at the municipal assembly on 18 August 2014. According to the old concession agreement from 1904, the facility has since reverted to the municipality.
