Late Gothic building frenzy in Graubünden

Samedan
On the eve of the Reformation, Graubünden had a pronounced community or neighborhood autonomy.

Previous branch churches broke away from the mother church and built their own, more beautiful and larger churches. The result was a veritable building frenzy.

Using the churches of San Peter Samedan and Santa Maria Silvaplana as examples, Walter Isler provides historical background to the late Gothic building boom in Graubünden and introduces the building techniques of the time. Transfer to Silvaplana by public transport (Engadin Bus).

On the eve of the Reformation - at the end of the 15th century - Graubünden had a strong sense of parish or neighborhood autonomy. Previous branch churches broke away from the mother church and built their own, more beautiful and larger churches. The result was a veritable building frenzy. Over 110 churches were built or rebuilt in the area of the then diocese of Chur.

After the great city fire in Chur in 1464, Steffan Klain from Freistadt in Upper Austria was appointed master builder in Chur. With his first work in Chur, the choir of St. Martin's Church, he set new architectural and design standards with finely structured vault constructions that were previously unknown in Graubünden. Master Stefan became the promoter of the late Gothic building boom in Graubünden. The églises filiales separated from the mother church and built their own, larger and more beautiful churches. This resulted in a veritable frénésie de construction.

Taking the example of the churches of San Peter Samedan and Santa Maria Silvaplana, Walter Isler presents the historical context of the boom in Gothic Revival construction in the Grisons and introduces the construction techniques of the time. Transfer to Silvaplana by public transport (Engadin Bus).

At the time of the Réforme - at the end of the 15th century - there was a very marked autonomy in the Grisons. The old branch churches separated from the mother church and built their own, larger and more beautiful churches. This resulted in a veritable frénésie de construction. More than 110 churches were built or transformed on the territory of the former Coire district.

After the great fire in the town of Coire in 1464, a certain Steffan Klain de Freistadt in Haute-Autriche was appointed architect of the town of Coire. With his first work in Coire, the chancel of the Saint-Martin church, he established new architectural and conceptual criteria with constructions of finely articulated voices, previously unknown in the Grisons. Maître Stefan became the promoter of the Gothic Revival architectural boom in the Grisons.
