In the summer of 2011, the tranquil Wagnerian town of Bayreuth is the scene of an unusual workshop: young German jazz musicians meet with Tunisian musicians. What begins with great mutual interest forms six months later in the Tunisian capital into the Contemporary Oriental Jazz collective Beyond Borders.
In the summer of 2017, the four musicians were invited back to the founding location in Bayreuth as an ensemble in residence. There they met the Serbian singer Radoslava Vorgic as part of the Orient meets Occident workshop. Together they performed at the Festival junger Künstler Bayreuth at the project Miserere Mei by Gregorio Allegri with a choir from Corfu, the Sarband-Ensemble as well as soloists of Byzantine and Arabic liturgical singing.
From baroque to jazz to Arabic music, this collaboration builds bridges between interpretation and improvisation. The goal is a dynamic, playful and contemporary interpretation of the music, which gives it a profound expression.
