Engadine Museum Night 2026: Nietzsche House

Want to delve into the life and work of Friedrich Nietzsche? For once, you can do it all in one evening when the museums, archives, and studios in the Upper Engadine are open.
During the summer season of 2026, the Nietzsche House will present a small special exhibition entitled: "Saved Again Through the Engadine" – Friedrich Nietzsche as a Traveler.

With the early end of his Basel professorship due to illness, a nomadic existence began for the 34-year-old Friedrich Nietzsche. For ten years without a permanent residence, the "fugitive wanderer" was constantly searching for places where he hoped to find relief from his manifold ailments and thus the opportunity to realize his philosophical projects. A dry, sunny atmosphere, walks through a magical landscape, and the freedom to structure his own day – this was conducive to Nietzsche's health and inspiration. The Engadine, and Sils Maria in particular, proved to be a reliable place to live and work for several months at a time: He returned to no other place as often as to his "summer residence," even if he was ultimately always just a "passing-through" traveler – this neologism coined by Nietzsche, bridging North and South, encapsulates the multifaceted ways in which he experienced, reflected upon, and described his constant travels.
The small exhibition reveals the significance of Sils and the Upper Engadine for the philosopher. It highlights the conditions under which this man, whose "home" was only ever temporary, experienced, endured, and sometimes even stylized his perpetual wanderings into world-discovering adventures.
