The King´s Singers are known for their special ensemble sound. This results above all from their initially quite unusual composition. As a rule, six-part male ensembles of the British type consist of two countertenors, two tenors and two basses or, instead of two basses, one baritone and one bass. The King´s Singers, however, are instead composed of two countertenors, one tenor, two baritones and one bass.
baritones and a bass. This formation, which came about rather by chance at the beginning, leads to a greater sonority in the lower voices and thus to the characteristic sound of the group.
With regard to their repertoire, the King´s Singers have a wide range, so that they cannot really be categorised in terms of a specific genre. Their programme includes polyphonic works from the Renaissance, sounds from the Romantic era, works by contemporary composers, religious music pieces or arrangements of current folk and pop songs in ´close harmony´. They sing in a wide variety of languages, besides English often also in French, Italian, Spanish, German or Latin.
