Artist Talk: Summer Exhibition 2021 with Gabriela Gerber & Lukas Bardill

Pontresina
Artist talk with Gabriela Gerber, Lukas Bardill and the architect Gion A. Caminada

This discussion with artists Gabriela Gerber and Lukas Bardill, and with Gion A. Caminada - architect of the maistra160 hotel in Pontresina, which is currently under construction - will focus on the disused barn as a rural relict. Continuing structural change is making the mythos surrounding this artefact both more powerful and less authoritative. The artist duo have made the motif of the disused barn the protagonist of their photography, videos and installations. They view these buildings as having shed their original purpose and developed new qualities as sculptural objects embedded in the landscape. Meanwhile, Caminada, Professor of Architecture and Design at ETH Zurich, has also long been interested in empty barns in villages, and has engaged with these structures together with his students over the course of multiple semesters. He builds on his experiences as a former shepherd and farmer´s son to consider the appeal of decay and ruin, the question of building for eternity or for a specific period of time, the relationship between barns and the topographies in which they sit, the political debates surrounding these structures, and their role in maintaining the potential of the landscape.
