In the Upper Engadin, two dozen energy benches are available for visitors and locals to use at various locations. These seating accommodations offer additional functions for bikers and hikers. The energy benches, which have been installed by the Upper Engadin communities, are part of the project “Engadin Arena”. The energy benches not only offer seating accommodations and bike stands, they also serve as free Wi-Hi hotspots and charging stations for mobile devices and e-bikes. Furthermore, a so-called beacon has already been installed in order to make the energy benches compatible with future digital apps. The benches are on the electrical grid and have been installed at locations where the paths of various user groups usually cross: those of hikers, bikers, runners and strollers in summer; and those of cross-country skiers, winter hikers and snowshoe hikers in winter.
The Engadin Arena is a project of the Maloja region which was initiated as part of the strategic development of the Engadin ski marathon. The Engadin Arena will be an all-year multi-sport open-air facility for endurance sports that covers the entire Upper Engadin, and its focus will be on popular sports. This project will streamline the existing infrastructure and coordinate the different sports. In addition to offering connected trails from Maloja to S-chanf for long-distance runners and bikers, central hubs will be created. Those hubs will be starting and meeting points of the various sports and will contribute to the athletic and social exchange.
