How to cross-country ski with confidence

Cross-country skiing is healthy for body and mind and it’s fun. However, there are a few tips to keep in mind to ensure this is actually the case. Did you know that approximately 7000 people have accidents while cross-country skiing every year? With the right equipment, a good technique, and thoughtfulness, cross-country skiers can glide safely through the winter.

Behavioural tips

Be prepared

  • Being aware of the level of difficulty (easy, medium, difficult), the length, the altitude information, and the duration of the trail helps you to choose the route according to your abilities. Click here for our interactive trail map.
  • Allow enough time and gather information ahead of time about the possibilities of turning back.
  • Skis, bindings, boots, poles - The cross-country ski centers and sport shops will get your equipment in shape and check the correct length of poles and skis.
  • Ski safely

    • You need to learn how to glide confidently on narrow skis: cross-country skiing instructors introduce beginners to the correct technique.
    • Be especially careful in icy conditions.
    • Only use the standard trails during daylight hours; there are three floodlit night trails for use in the evening. If you do your laps in the dark, you reduce the quality of the freshly groomed trails for the next day and run the risk of colliding with snow groomers.
    • Never walk directly behind a snow groomer. Doing so could endanger your life.

    Be considerate

    • The person skiing downhill has the right of way.
    • Please do not skate over the classic track
    • On the four designated dog trails, four-legged friends are allowed to run alongside cross-country skiers without a leash; dogs are not allowed on any other trails.
    • An extensive network of winter hiking trails is available for pedestrians and cyclists. Walking/cycling leave tracks on the cross-country ski trails that affect the quality of the slopes.
    • The rules of conduct of the International Ski Federation FIS also help to ensure conflict-free cross-country skiing enjoyment.
