Alpine cuisine on the Alp Grüm and elsewhere

Bernina Glaciers - the grisons glacier experience

Alpine cuisine on the Alp Grüm and elsewhere

Cuisine and panorama
In the numerous, family-run alpine huts in the Bernina Glaciers experience, you can discover traditional alpine cuisine in all its facets. The culinary pleasure is accompanied by Grisons hospitality and breathtaking views of the numerous sun terraces.

Alp Grüm Viewpoint
The Alp Grüm can best be reached with the red RhB line. It’s a fantastic viewpoint with views of the Palü Glacier, turquoise mountain lakes and far-reaching views of the entire Val Poschiavo. Right by the station is the Albergo Ristorante Alp Grüm; around 15 minutes away on foot and up on a spur you’ll find the Casa Alpina Belvedere. Both locations offer honest alpine cuisine and basic accommodation – and, of course, the unique panorama.

The idyllic alp away from the traffic on the Bernina Pass can also be easily reached on foot. From Ospizio Bernina, the trail first takes you along the Lago Bianco. You then continue via blossoming meadows and through a bright larch forest and down to the Casa Alpina Belvedere. The Alp Grüm is also a popular interim station for mountain bikers on the Bernina Express Route.

Mountain restaurants at lofty heights
On the summits of the Diavolezza and Lagalb (only open in winter), on the Corvatsch and on Muottas Muragl and the Alp Languard you’ll find fantastic mountain huts and restaurants with wonderful far-reaching views of the Bernina mountains and the Upper Engadin lake landscape. The sunny terraces can be easily reached via cable car and tempt visitors with culinary day trips under the invigorating mountain sun.

Hit parade of alpine huts

Morteratsch alpine cheese diary
The popular Morteratsch alpine cheese dairy is open from mid-June to early October. During this time, visitors can look over the shoulder of the cheesemaker at the Pontresina alpine dairy as he makes cheese over an open fire. The alpine masters manufacture Heutal cheese, glacier “Mutschli” and fresh “Molkenziger” – and you can purchase the cheese specialities on site.

Berghaus Diavolezza
In the heart of the “ballroom of the Alps” and high above the Pers Glacier and Morteratsch Glacier. Whether you’re sitting inside behind the large panoramic windows or outside on the sun terrace – the fabulous mountain world with the striking Piz Palü and Piz Bernina mountains seems close enough to touch.

Chamanna Boval SAC hut
The ideal starting point for ice and rock tours in the heart of the Bernina Range. Countless wonderful ski tours. A very rewarding day hike high up on the Morteratsch Glacier.

Chamanna Tschierva SAC hut
Unique views from the terrace of the hut on the Biancograt and Tschierva Glacier. As the name of the Tschierva hut suggests, there are many deer but also chamois to observe.

Chamanna Coaz SAC hut
Here you’re very close to the Val Roseg glaciers and can sit on the sun terrace and enjoy the great panorama, a fresh bowl of barley soup or some home-made cake.

Gletscher Restaurant Morteratsch
A traditional Pontresina classic: the Gletscher Restaurant Morteratsch is located directly on the Rhaetian Railway, a UNESCO world heritage site, and at the entrance to the Morteratsch Valley. Three parlours with lots of Swiss stone pine invite you to linger for a while.

Restaurant Berninahaus
An old guesthouse on the Bernina pass road with a history dating back over 500 years (RhB stop: Bernina Häuser). A wide range of regional specialities await you in typical Engadin lounge areas.

Ospizio Bernina
On both sides of the pass road there are simple guesthouses (Ospizio Bernina and Cambrena) and on the rail line below the Ospizio Bernina station buffet.

Alp Languard
Can be reached in 15 minutes by cable car directly from Pontresina. Lovingly prepared hut cuisine with local dishes. The views of the Piz Bernina and other summits in the group are phenomenal. The hike starts here and goes towards Piz Languard and the ibex paradise.

Chamanna Segantini hut
The simple hut at 2,731 m above sea level is named after the painter Giovanni Segantini, who died here in 1899. The hut can be reached on foot via a rugged ascent from the Alp Languard or the Muottas Muragl mountain station. The simple hut dishes taste simply great at this height. The panorama gives you wings.
