A delightful mixture of old Engadin houses and elegant belle époque hotels line the picturesque winding streets of this sheltered and sunny mountain resort, creating a unique charm. Located at the foot of the Bernina massif and framed by towering peaks, Pontresina is also a popular base for mountaineers.
There are plenty of gentler experiences on offer, too – such as romantic rides in horse-drawn carriages into the Val Roseg, through forests of Swiss stone pine. Especially interesting are the free village tours through historic Pontresina, held every Wednesday afternoon. These provide fascinating insights into 1,000 years of local history, as well as into Romansh culture, language and architecture.
One particularly impressive sight is the church of Santa Maria, regarded as one of the most precious sacred buildings in the canton of Graubünden.
