Only the gauge of the railway is narrow, everything else is epic: the ride on the Rhaetian Railway over the highest Alpine rail crossing in Europe is one of the most spectacular of all train trips.
The Bernina Express chugs gently past the sparkling blue Morteratsch Glacier and climbs - without the benefit of cog traction - over the 2,253-metre (7,392-ft) Bernina Pass before reaching Alp Grüm and fabulous views of the Palü Glacier.The line then leads in a series of bold curves down to Poschiavo.
