The gian glacial mills of Cavaglia
Fascinating glacial mills lie hidden at the Cavaglia Glacier Garden with its alpine vegetation and rich flora. These natural wonders were created by glaciation over several millennia. Since summer 2021, a spectacular gorge trail has been added to the glacial mills that have been uncovered since 1994. The newly developed part provides views of incredibly bizarre erosion forms and ten more glacial mills. Jürg Conzett, the famous bridge builder, designed the 180-metre long trail. It was important only to make minimal interventions and harmoniously integrate the steps and trails into nature.
The impressive natural phenomenon of the glacial mills is created by the melt water from the retreating glaciers. Giant vortexes inside the glaciers meet the bottom of the glaciers at a great height. Water, sand and gravel rotate at high speed and grind the rocks over millennia. The visible results are the giant, smoothly polished holes – which are also known as the “pots of the giants” (Marmite dei Giganti). The “Grummo the giant” children’s book reveals the secret of the glacial mills and will amaze children.
The Cavaglia Glacier Garden can be easily reached with the Bernina line of the Rhaetian Railway (part of the UNESCO world heritage). The circular trip to the glacial mills and the “Orrido di Cavaglia” gorge trail are just a stone’s throw away from the station.
